Still life, grudgingly in progress

I’m working on this still life in the studio in an effort to expand my comfort zone of free expression abstract painting or painting from imagination into working from real life occasionally.  This piece is still in progress, but I’m really not enjoying it.  Working from real life just feels tedious and constrained for me, but I will continue to work on it.  I’m trying to console myself by deciding that it’s still an abstract in that there are about eleventy bazillion leaves in the actual arrangement and there is no way I can draw each of them exactly without ending up heavily medicated and in a straight jacket.  However, I have tried my best to capture the overall shape of the arrangement, the areas where background is peeking through, and a fairly accurate representation of the colors and distribution of the values and intensity of the colors throughout.  I don’t have a photo of the actual arrangement but will get one to show side by side if I post this piece when it’s finished.  Sigh…

  1. It’s beautiful…abstract or not and it looks like you’ve captured an arrangement that believable to me, even tho it may not look it exactly like what you have. It does look like a beautiful arrangement of leaves and the colors are fantastic.
